I asked Mr Ward to take a CSV and XLS files and test results. Here's the response. ~ Joseph M

I’ve now tested the CSV and Excel files in SawNest. Both read as 1,500 plywood parts and 4,700 lumber parts for the 50-crate job, with the fasteners kept separately.

For the test, I used inches, 48 × 96 sheets with no edge trim, 144 inches of usable board length, a 1/8-inch kerf and rotation allowed. The imports, layouts and downloads checked out with those settings. I also checked the other tools below.

SawNest is a browser-based toolkit for planning woodworking cuts. Import a CSV or Excel cut list, or enter parts directly, then generate labeled cutting layouts for sheet goods and lumber. Users can set stock dimensions, blade kerf, edge trim and grain/rotation rules, review dimensioned parts, and save or export their plans. The site also includes material calculators and adjustable project generators for cabinets, drawers, shelving, bookshelves and workbenches.
The full tool list is at https://sawnest.com/tools, with project generators at https://sawnest.com/project-lab.

Planning
  • Cut-list import: brings CSV and Excel parts lists into the planning workflow.
  • Sheet cut optimizer: arranges mixed rectangular parts on plywood or other sheet stock.
  • Board cut optimizer: fits finished lengths onto lumber, trim or other linear stock.

Quick calculators
  • Plywood sheets: estimates sheet quantities from area and a waste allowance.
  • Board feet: calculates lumber volume and cost from dimensions and quantity.
  • Saw kerf: checks how many equal pieces fit after blade loss.
  • Sheet yield: compares two grid orientations for identical rectangular parts.
  • Decimal to fraction: converts decimal inches to a selected shop fraction.
  • Plywood weight: estimates weight from dimensions, quantity and material density.
Project generators
  • Base cabinet: generates sides, bottom, shelves and stretchers.
  • Drawer box: sizes drawer parts from the opening and hardware clearances.
  • Closet shelving: calculates uprights, decks and shelves for equal-width bays.
  • Cabinet door: sizes Shaker rails, stiles and panels from the opening.
  • Bookshelf: generates bookcase parts and a sheet layout from finished dimensions.
  • Workbench: generates plywood parts for the top, shelf, legs and rails.

Spreadsheet template
  • Excel/CSV cut-list template: a starting parts list for users who prefer working in a spreadsheet.
